To those who want to apply to a research student position in School of Computing, Institute of Science Tokyo:

Thank you for your interest in our laboratory and in Science Tokyo. Unfortunately, our graduate school does not accept “research students” at all. Because our entrance examination is highly competitive, it is not realistic for any laboratory to accept those whose admission is uncertain. Please note that we do not have any exceptions, so we cannot help you in this matter. There is a Japanese government scholarship program (MEXT scholarship through Japanese embassy recommendation). Science Tokyo also has entrance examinations called the International Graduate School Program IGP(C). Please kindly check the related websites described below. We wish you can pass the entrance examination and we are willing to welcome you to our laboratory then.

1. Institute of Science Tokyo Undergraduate Students

Affiliation with Yanagisawa Lab

Yanagisawa Laboratory belongs to the Department of Computer Science, School of Computing. Please note that we only accept undergraduate students from the Department of Computer Science.

2. Institute of Science Tokyo Master’s / Doctoral Students

Life in the Laboratory

Laboratory Environment

Upon joining the laboratory, you will be assigned an individual booth. Depending on your needs, a laptop (Mac/Win) or desktop computer (Win/Linux) will be provided. You can also use the laboratory’s cluster machines and the paid services of TSUBAME4.0, the supercomputer at Institute of Science Tokyo.

Seminar Schedule

Yanagisawa Laboratory holds seminars three times a week (Mon & Thu 10:45-12:25 + approximately 3 times per month).Outside of seminar hours, you are free to manage your own time (there is no core time requirement), but we recommend coming to the lab during the day (“coming” to the lab — whether or not you are actually doing research is not a concern).

Research Theme Selection

Undergraduate students attend multiple research meetings in April, and then consult with faculty members around early May to decide on their research themes. We welcome students who bring their own research ideas, but this requires the faculty member to be able to provide appropriate guidance,so please make sure to consult thoroughly. (In such cases, we recommend contacting Prof. Yanagisawa in advance.)
